ルイジアナ保健病院局から「炎症箇所の洗浄に水道水を使用しないでください」との発表が。それというのも、水道水から傷口から侵入し脳みそを食べてしまうというアメーバ、フォーラーネグレリアが発見されたからです。ルイジアナではこれによって、2人が死亡しています。


■フォーラーネグレリアとは？

フォーラーネグレリアは自由生活性のアメーバで、水温25-35度の環境を好みます。池や湖、温泉等、適温の水があればどこでも生活できます。ルイジアナ保健病院局によると、例えアメーバがいたとしても飲むぶんには問題ないそうです。が、傷口や鼻等から入りこむようなので、例えば鼻うがいなんかはアウト。


■もし体内にはいったら？

フォーラーネグレリアは中枢神経系を冒します。体内に入り感染が始まると、1日から14日の間に症状が出始めます。初めは匂いや味が麻痺してきて、次に嘔吐や発熱、頭痛等の症状がでます。目眩や幻覚をみることも。やがて昏睡状態に陥り、発症から1-2週間後には死に至ります。もし、中枢神経系を冒されたら助かる見込みはとても低く、約98％の人が死亡しています。


■ 予防策は？

冒頭にも書きましたが、水を沸騰させて殺菌してから使いましょうね。
